Yeading Carpet Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Yeading Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with our cleaning activities and maintaining safe working conditions at all times.

Policy Statement and Objectives

Our objective is to prevent injury, ill health, property damage and environmental harm arising from our work. We will achieve this by assessing risks, implementing effective control measures, providing training and supervision, and promoting a culture in which safety is integral to every cleaning task.

Management accepts overall responsibility for health and safety performance within Yeading Carpet Cleaners and will provide appropriate resources so that this policy can be implemented and maintained.

Legal Responsibilities

Yeading Carpet Cleaners complies with relevant health and safety legislation and approved codes of practice that apply to professional cleaning services. We monitor updates to legal requirements and adjust our working methods, risk assessments and training accordingly to ensure ongoing compliance.

Management Responsibilities

Management is responsible for:

Ensuring that risk assessments are carried out for all significant cleaning activities, including carpet, rug, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services.

Providing and maintaining safe equipment, tools and cleaning machinery in good working order.

Ensuring that suitable personal protective equipment is provided, used correctly and replaced when needed.

Maintaining safe systems of work, including clear procedures for the use, storage and disposal of cleaning chemicals.

Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees have a duty to safeguard their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. Employees of Yeading Carpet Cleaners are expected to:

Follow all health and safety instructions, procedures and training provided by the company.

Use equipment, machinery and personal protective equipment properly and report any faults immediately.

Handle cleaning chemicals safely and in accordance with the safety data and training received.

Maintain good housekeeping in the areas where work is being carried out, keeping walkways clear and reducing trip hazards.

Report accidents, incidents, hazards or near misses promptly so that they can be investigated and controlled.

Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

We identify hazards and assess the risks arising from our carpet and upholstery cleaning activities in homes, offices and commercial premises. Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever significant changes occur in methods, equipment or products.

Safe systems of work are developed based on these assessments and cover tasks such as setting up equipment, operating machinery, handling chemicals, working in occupied premises, and cleaning stairs or high-use walkways. These systems are communicated to all relevant staff and monitored for effectiveness.

Chemical Safety and COSHH

Cleaning chemicals used by Yeading Carpet Cleaners are selected to be effective while minimising health and environmental risks. Hazardous substances are controlled in accordance with safety data and industry best practice.

Measures include limiting exposure, using safer alternatives where possible, providing appropriate personal protective equipment, and ensuring secure storage and correct labelling. Staff are trained in safe dilutions, application methods, ventilation needs and correct disposal of residues.

Use of Equipment and Electrical Safety

We use professional carpet cleaning machines, vacuums and related tools suitable for domestic and commercial environments. All electrical equipment is inspected regularly and maintained in safe working condition.

Only trained personnel are permitted to operate machinery. Cables are routed to reduce trip risks, and equipment is switched off and unplugged when not in use or when being moved between areas. Defective equipment is removed from service immediately and reported for repair or replacement.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Our work may involve lifting, carrying and moving hoses, machines and containers. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, manual handling tasks are assessed and planned in advance.

Where reasonably practicable, handling aids and team lifting are used for heavier equipment. Employees receive guidance on safe lifting techniques, posture and working methods that minimise strain during cleaning tasks, including when treating larger floor areas or multi-storey properties.

Working in Client Premises

When working in clients homes or commercial properties, our staff respect the premises and take steps to protect occupants and visitors. This includes maintaining clear access routes, using warning signs where appropriate, managing moisture on floors to reduce slip risks, and controlling noise and disruption as far as reasonably practicable.

Children, pets and other vulnerable persons are kept away from work areas and chemicals during cleaning operations. Staff are instructed to secure hoses and tools and to leave the work area tidy and free from hazards on completion.

Training, Information and Supervision

All staff receive appropriate induction and ongoing training relevant to their roles. This includes safe operation of carpet cleaning equipment, chemical safety, manual handling, use of personal protective equipment, and emergency procedures.

Supervision is provided to confirm that training is understood and safe practices are followed in day-to-day work. Additional training is given when new equipment, products or methods are introduced.

Accident Reporting and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported as soon as possible to management. Records are maintained to help identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

Staff are briefed on emergency arrangements, including managing spills, dealing with electrical issues, responding to ill health at work and raising the alarm if required. First aid provisions are maintained in line with the nature of our activities.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

Yeading Carpet Cleaners monitors health and safety performance through regular checks, equipment inspections, feedback from staff and clients, and review of incident reports. This policy and associated procedures are reviewed periodically to ensure they remain suitable and effective.

We are committed to continuously improving our health and safety standards and integrating safe working practices into every aspect of our carpet and upholstery cleaning services.
